IPL magic over? LSG’s Digvesh Rathi struggles in DPL 2025

Final 12 months, Digvesh was among the best bowlers within the DPL. The leggie took 14 wickets, the 4th most within the match.

Digvesh Rathi was one of the best spinners in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. No one had even heard about the 25-year-old before he made his IPL debut. By the end, he made sure everyone remembered his name. His signature celebration irked the BCCI and Abhishek Sharma. He got into a fight, was fined multiple times, and even got banned for one match.

Digvesh Rathi’s sudden rise & IPL success

But he did his job. Digvesh took 14 wickets at 30.64 and had an economy of 8.22. By all metrics, he was Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) best bowler. He has been propelled into fame.

About 12 months ago, Digvesh had done nothing to show. He hadn’t even made his debut for Delhi. In August 2024, he got a chance in the Delhi Premier League (DPL). He didn’t just turn out to be South Delhi Superstarz’s best bowler but also one of the top performers in the league.

That was enough for him to be bought by LSG for Rs 30 lakh at the IPL 2025 auction. Just a couple of days later, he represented Delhi for the first time in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Digvesh played just 2 matches and took 3 wickets.

All going wrong at DPL 2025

We all know by now what he’s done in the IPL. But is the sheen coming off? Was it all luck? In the DPL 2025 season, Digvesh has played just 2 matches, and his captain, Ayush Badoni, hasn’t even completed his overs once. He’s gone for 57 runs in 5 overs and hasn’t taken a wicket yet.

Against East Delhi Riders on August 2, he started well. After going for 1 run in his first over, Anuj Rawat and Hardik Sharma hit him for 23 runs in his 2nd over (12th). Badoni didn’t give him the ball in the match that went to the last ball.

Well, one bad match doesn’t decide anything. You can have a bad game once in a while. It’s two games now. Playing against the West Delhi Lions, Digvesh didn’t complete his bowling quota again. This time, he was hit for 33 runs off 3 overs.

Left-handed opener Ankit Kumar took a particular liking to him. Digvesh bowled 13 of his 18 balls at him and was smashed for 28 runs. This included 3 sixes and 2 fours. Both had a tussle as well. Both exchanged words after pulling out mid-delivery back-to-back. Later, Ankit showed Digvesh his middle finger after hitting him for two consecutive sixes.

Digvesh would hope his form comes back soon in DPL 2025. And LSG will be watching with a keen eye as well. They can’t have their best bowler of the IPL 2025 being hit in the domestic league and then expect him to perform against the world’s best batter.
