Government Focus on Safe Digital Innovation via Online Gaming Bill

The government has decided to relax some rules regarding social games in order to promote the gaming sector in the country, as per the latest update in Hindustan Times. Although money games are strictly prohibited, the government is allowing social games, which are played just for the sake of entertainment and not involving money, to register voluntarily.

This would allow small gamers in the country to keep making games, but in the case of e-sports and competitive games, the gamers are required to register so that everything is fair.

The government has officially begun to establish the Online Gaming Authority of India. The latter is akin to a “digital court.” The authority has the power to call individuals and investigate companies that attempt to “hide” money betting within their applications. The authority is the final arbiter of what is a safe “social game” and what is an illegal “money game.”

The latest update indicates that the government is working with banks to stop all the “money gaming” payments. If the website or app is found to be providing cash prizes, the government will use the IT Act to ban the website or app across the country.

The penalty is high so that no one tries to do this illegally. The penalty for the company can go up to ₹1 crore, and the owners can go to jail for three years. If they are caught for the second time, they can go to jail for five years and face a fine of ₹2 crore.
