India cricket team have scripted history by registering the highest total in a T20 World Cup final with their record-setting total against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Batting first in the contest, whirlwind knocks from Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan powered India past the 200-run mark within 15 overs. The record for the previous highest score made in a T20 World Cup final also belonged to India – with the winners scoring 176/7 in 20 overs against South Africa in the 2024 edition.

India’s 255/5 total against New Zealand is the highest in a T20 World Cup final, going past the total they had managed to amass against South Africa in 2024 in Barbados. Others on the list include New Zealand, Australia and West Indies.

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma provided the perfect start for India in the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final, stitching together a record-breaking 92-run partnership in the powerplay. While Sharma was dismissed after his 18-ball half-century – which happens to be the fastest in T20 WC 2026 – the carnage continued, with Ishan Kishan and Samson leading the charge. Sanju played yet another memorable 89-run knock, continuing on his red-hot form. Meanwhile, Kishan played a handy 52-run cameo off 25 deliveries to keep India’s run-rate going on a high.

India then lost three wickets in quick succession in the middle overs, forcing them to slow down. However, a 24-run last over from Shivam Dube powered India past 250 runs, allowing them to set a target of 256 runs for New Zealand.
