After Pat Cummins’ setback, SRH lose one other Australian for complete IPL 2026 season
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) do not have an out-and-out powerplay bowler after shedding Mohammed Shami to Lucknow Tremendous Giants (LSG) in a commerce.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) hadn’t even settled the Pat Cummins situation when another problem walked in. Jack Edwards, one of their quieter but clever auction picks, is now out of IPL 2026 with a foot injury. Just like that, a squad that already looked slightly stretched has taken another hit.
Edwards may not have started for the side with the availability of Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, and Liam Livingstone there. But he was one of those players teams like SRH rely on to balance the XI. A seam-bowling all-rounder who can give you two overs, maybe three on a good day, and provide hitting with the bat lower down the order. A typical T20 player that suited SRH.
Jack Edwards ruled out, SRH in limbo
The 25-year-old was coming off a strong Big Bash season with the Sydney Sixers. Nineteen wickets in 13 games isn’t a small return, especially when you’re bowling across phases. He also chipped in with 133 runs, not match-winning numbers, but enough to show he’s not a tailender, as he scored them at SR of 168.35.
Overall, Edwards has played 77 T20 matches, scored 853 runs and picked up 52 wickets. He has three FC centuries. Those are solid, rounded numbers for someone who was born in 2000. SRH picked him up for ₹3 crore at the auction, and interestingly, he was the only uncapped overseas player to be signed. That tells you they had a specific role in mind. Now, that role needs to be filled internally.
Pat Cummins, their captain, is still recovering from a back stress issue and will miss the start of the season. His last competitive appearance came back in December 2025, and he hasn’t played any part in the T20 World Cup either. That means SRH are entering the tournament without their leader and without one of their utility options. Ishan Kishan will lead the side in the meantime with Abhishek Sharma as his deputy.
There is also a broader trend at play here. Australian fast bowlers, across teams, are either unavailable or being carefully managed. Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Ellis have all been ruled out of parts or all of the tournament due to injuries or workload management.
