Shreyas Iyer in ICU resulting from inside bleeding, no particular timeline on star’s return
Shreyas Iyer has reportedly been in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for the final couple of days following his harm in IND vs AUS third ODI
India cricket team star Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a hospital in Sydney following his rib injury in IND vs AUS 3rd ODI. The incident took place during the third ODI in Sydney when Iyer dived to take a sharp catch of Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. As per reports, Iyer is set to remain under observation in the hospital for 2-7 days.
Shreyas Iyer suffers internal bleeding
As per news agency PTI, a source claimed that Iyer has been in the ICU for the last couple of days as scan reports had detected internal bleeding. The source claimed that Shreyas will have stay at the hospital for longer in order to remain under observation as it is important to stop the spreading of the infection due to bleeding. The source added that the BCCI medical team and the physios had taken the batter to the hospital immediately, adding that while things are stable now, it could have been more fatal.
“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” BCCI said in a statement.
“Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately. He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop the spreading of infection due to bleeding,” a source privy to the development told PTI.
While completing the catch in the 3rd ODI, Iyer landed awkwardly on his left side and immediately clutched his ribs in pain. It was an incredible effort by Iyer as it is never easy for a player to run behind and take an overhead catch. Later, scans had revealed that he had sustained an injury to his left rib cage.
The source told PTI that it was not possible at the moment to determine when Iyer could return to action, given the nature of the injury.
“Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it’s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket,” the source said.
