It was apparent that Green wasn’t pleased. After a softball question about scoring runs again, he was asked how tough it was when he was struggling. This pissed him off. “I’m not answering that question. Next question”, he said. The journalist decided to end the interview there, since Green was in no mood to talk.
He tells the all-rounder that it’s fine if he doesn’t wish to talk. While leaving, Green mutters, “Waste of time.” The journalist then told Green that he’d travelled about 50km for the interview and waited all day for the chat. Hearing this, Green returned and asked him, “Why are you out to get me?”
Something clearly wasn’t right. Green just wasn’t in the right frame of mind. Because there’s nothing wrong with what the journalist said. Asking a simple question about how tough it was when things weren’t going your way isn’t something a professional sportsperson should have trouble answering.
West Australia’s coach, assistant coach Beau Casson, even stepped in to intervene and apologised to the journalist for Green’s standoffish behaviour. It’s clear that lofty expectations and poor performance have been weighing him down. He was labelled as the best since Ricky Ponting. Yet, he averages just 32.75 in Test cricket. His last hundred in the format came in February 2024.
KKR in trouble?
If Green can’t handle the pressure when basically no one’s watching, how will he handle the glitz and glam of the IPL? Mind you, he’s been paid a whopping INR 25.20 crore by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). What will he do if he fails and is asked the tough questions?
KKR might be wondering this themselves. They’ve spent more than 20% of their auction purse on him. He isn’t a youngster anymore, either. There’s no excuse to let the price tag pressure take you down now. Green will have to step up, because the Indian media won’t be gentle if he fails.
